real women…

All right, this is a touchy subject…Glamour  magazine has published a photo on page 194 of their September issue that is getting lots of attention.  The model in the photo is an adorable blonde, who is letting it all hang out, or over, in her case.  Yes, she’s a real woman.  And yes, many of us could stand to lose a few pounds, but when you publish your flaws for all to see, we have a right to comment about it.  This model is so cute, and her body isn’t bad, but how can you not look at her stomach?  According to Glamour, women are coming out of the woodwork in support of this model, saying she is just being real.  That said, I found out she is only 20 years old.  I thought perhaps that she was in her 40′s, had a couple of kids, but nope.  She is not even old enough to have a beer belly legally.  Come on, honey, do some sit-ups.  Go to a weight watchers meeting.  How about a tummy-tuck?  Do something.  And whatever you do, stop showing us your stomach, or at least try to suck it in…that’s what real women do.

I’m all for a woman being proud of her body and having some curves. I think that’s a lot more attractive than the size zero women. But there’s something that I find disturbing about that picture. She’s 20 and is a total slouch. At her age, she could do 10 situps a day and lose the flabby belly. What it looks like is that she was grossly overweight at some point, lost the weight quickly and still has the extra skin.

I’m not sure what to make of this, really. A cute 20 year old guy with a bit of a tummy wouldn’t be viewed the same.

Bravo to her for putting it all out there and giving us a topic of discussion. She’s brave for doing so.

Why does she need to join Weight Watchers or do sit-ups or have a tummy tuck in order to please you? Seems like she’s comfortable with her body and its supposed faults. So she has a poochy stomach, who gives a shit? I’d rather see her than some anorexic waif who is 40 pounds underweight. That’s not realistic. But yet those women and the fashion industry cause a lot of women to have unrealistic expectations which can lead to eating disorders. If she feels she’s in shape and fit, who are you to judge her? Take a look at her pose. She’s not exactly sitting up. I dare you to get into that position, leaning over, and not have a poochy stomach.

Most of the time I like you Wendy, but in this case, you’re being a bitch and not in a pleasant way.

Cherry, she doesn’t have to do a darned thing to please me. I think she is so cute, but I have to be honest with you, I can’t get past that tummy of hers when I look at that photo. Now I am fully admitting that I could stand to lose a few…uh, ten….maybe 20 pounds, but I am not posing in a magazine. And I try to work with my flaws, not accentuate them. If you were watching the news and the anchor had a big, hairy mole on her face, admit it, you wouldn’t be able to take your eyes off of it, especially if you had an HD-TV. I am all for real women, but she’s a model. She is supposed to look good. That’s her job. I guess my job is to be a bitch. I hope you like me again someday.
May she without “skin” cast the first Cheeto.

Remember the first season of Survivor and contestant Richard Hatch who was fond of nudism? This photo, neck down, has me recalling images of Richard sitting naked on a log.

    Wendy,

Not all models are going to be size 0. She’s a plus-sized model, they exist in this world. There is a market out there for plus-sized clothing. And are you saying that fat people can’t look good, can’t be cute? You said yourself that she’s cute. But in some naked photo you just can’t get past the belly?

I don’t read Glamour magazine so I’m not sure what the context of the photo was about, but there is no reason that a plus-sized model can’t be shown in a magazine article. Did they show different sized models in this Glamour magazine article?

Beauty comes in all forms. You’ve just been conditioned thru societal pressures to believe that a model has to be thin. It’s time that idea got shoved into a garbage can where it belongs.

Look, you can’t allow pictures of yourself to be published with your stomach hanging out like that and then demand that no one notice.

Now, being a bit of a beast myself, I’m generally pretty forgiving when it comes to physical imperfections, but the fact of the matter is that fat people aren’t the fashionable standard of beauty nowadays. You can argue that this isn’t fair or say that it’s simply shallow, and perhaps it is, but it is nonetheless reality.

Is it a social construct? Maybe, but so what? It is what it is, and calling it a social construct doesn’t make it’s unattractiveness go away, or make a flabby exposed stomach any more appealing.

Count this as a cheer for the girl with the belly. There’s a difference between skinny and attractive. This girl is attractive (and skinny by my standards). Get over that fashion magazine bullshit. You participate in your own oppression. And, by the way, I guess you don’t know that guys only look at the good parts, and everyone has good parts.
